A grand jury has cleared two state police detectives and a deputy U.S. Marshal in the shooting death of a Portsmouth man who drove into two of the law enforcers as they tried to arrest him in Woonsocket in April 2022. Members of the Rhode Island State Police Violent Fugitive Task Force opened fire on Russell Dufault during the attempted arrest on North Main Street, according to an account that was provided at the time by state police Col. James Manni, who was in the final hours of his tour with state police.
